Primary Purpose of Job:
The estimator's goal is to accurately estimate the costs associated with developing and producing products.
Principal Accountabilities:
1-Take the ideas behind a new product and determine what the
potential cost of the product would be based on the company's
manufacturing costs. The company uses this information to
establish wholesale and retail pricing for the product.
2-Develop cost information for the company and spend the
majority of the workday preparing data associated with either
producing a new product or improving the design of an existing
product.
3-Refer to real labor costs and material costs for completed
products to help him create an estimate for a product that has
yet to be made.
4-Maintain relationships with suppliers and equipment vendors.
These relationships are used to keep track of current pricing
and to negotiate better rates for long-term or large-scale
projects.
5-Spend time visiting various subcontractors and negotiating with
service professionals and suppliers. After careful calculations,
the estimator will then forecast the production costs within a
given timetable.
6-Analyze blueprints and other documentation to prepare time,
cost, materials, and labor estimates.
7-Consult with clients, vendors, personnel in other departments
to discuss and formulate estimates and resolve issues.
8-Confer with engineers, architects and Branch Manager on
changes and adjustments to cost estimates.
9-Prepare estimates used by management for purposes such as
planning, organizing, and scheduling work.
10-Review material and labor requirements, to decide whether it
is more cost-effective to produce or purchase certain
components.
11-Prepare cost and expenditure statements and other
necessary documentation at regular intervals during the
production process.
12-Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and
subcontractors.
13-Set up cost monitoring and reporting systems and procedures.
14-Establish and maintain tendering process, and conduct
negotiations.
15-Conduct special studies to develop and establish standard
hour and related cost data or to effect cost reduction.
